I have a 35 cf catenary arch kiln made primarily of soft brick in the arch,
front and back walls, and hard brick on the outside of the front and back
walls,
floor, flu, and chimney. I am going to be selling it and a friend would like
to tear it down and use the bricks to rebuild her own design. She has asked
me if she can pay by the brick. The kiln was fired approximately 30 times
and the brick is in very good shape. Can anyone offer any suggestions
for what a fair asking price is for the kiln and/or individual bricks?
Any help is much appreciated ,,,,,

Hello Debbie,
Since no one answered you, on the listserv anyway, here's my
idea of a fair price for your bricks.
If the bricks are truly in very good condition with no breaks,
missing corners, fluxed areas:
If I were SELLING, I would ask $1 a brick for the insulating bricks
and 50 cents a brick for the hard bricks.
If I were BUYING, I would offer 25 cents a brick for the insulating
bricks and 10 cents a brick for the hard bricks.
If we average it out, we come up with a "fair" price of 63 cents per
insulating brick, and 30 cents per hard brick.
If your friend is willing to take all the bricks, including a few cracked
ones, so you aren't left with anything to deal with, that ought to be
worth a small discount off the price.
The truth, of course, is that anything is worth whatever someone
is willing to sell it for, and someone else buy it for.

Debbie,
Check the current price of the bricks new and knock off 25-50%.
30 firings isn't (better not be!) much if you didn't cut all the
bricks, didn't mortar them together, haven't overfired or used
salt. You want to be fair to your friend but the sale benefits
both of you, and you should also be fair to yourself.
