You could probably find many references to Anderson Ranch workshops in back
issues of Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, etc. Especially CM's summer
workshop issue.

Hello to All,
I am taking a class with Walter Ostrom at Anderson Ranch in a couple of
weeks. Has anyone ever been there? I have never been to Colorado and if
anyone has any feedback about what to expect I would appreciate it. I took
a two day workshop with Walter at the 92nd Street Y a number of years ago
and it was wonderful. I am looking forward to two weeks with a great
teacher. Thanks, Francine Epstein from New Jersey where it hasn't rained
for the whole weekend!!!!

I've taken several "two week" worshops at Anderson Ranch,
including a memorable one with Victor Babu, and two with
Pete Pinnell, one including Ah Leon. You're in for a treat.
Walter is a joy to work with and a hilarious man. The best
things about Anderson Ranch are the wonderful proximity
to work, lending an incredible intensity to the scene, and
secondly the amazing crossover communication that goes
on with other workshops in progress. The scenery ain't bad
either. Wecome to Colorado.

I took a workshop at Anderson Ranch a couple of years ago, and thought I
had died and gone to heaven. It is beautiful there, the people you meet
are fantastic, the food was fabulous (wait till you see the enormous shino
salad bowl that holds the greens). The nightly slide shows and talks by
artists from various media, the facilities... I could go on and on. I am
saving for another trip, but somehow the vacation fund is suffering
from "failure to thrive" syndrome.
The only caveat is that at 8,200 feet, the air is pretty thin for a
flatlander like me, and hiking up the hill from the studio to the condo
was a very rude awakening to how sedentary I had been. Just take it slow
and easy the first few days if you aren't accustomed to altitude.

Francine -
Without specific qns. from you, it's difficult to
answer but....
Expect a well run program with a beautiful studio
facility which is open 24/7 (?) Doug Casebeer is
fantastic, knows so much & is also a good teacher in
his own right. How hard you work is up to you -
temptations abound i.e. great scenery - get to Maroon
Bells. If you're driving, consider going a few days
early to get the wanderlust out of your system. Also
if driving, calculate time carefully - Snowmass
Village is a ways past Denver.
AR kitchen puts out great food but there are also good
restaurants in Aspen, some interesting shopping but
most stores are just the same upscale ones from the
mall back home.
Expect to make progress in your work but NOT
necessarily miracles. (We all get pretty keyed up over
such escape opportunities.) Don't expect miracles from
the firings either. If you've never been in a class
situation, you MUST hang loose if things don't go as
you expect.
Above all, RELAX, ENJOY, hang out and learn all you
can - it's smart to help the assistants load kilns,
etc. Definitely attend any lectures and slide
presentations (if interested in artists in other
media) - there will be quite a bit of stimulation
coming at you from sources OTHER than Walter and work.
Have a great time!

Dear Karen,
thanks for the information. I am so excited but I know what you mean about
hanging loose. Workshops are good for learning a lot but I do better work
when I can focus in my own studio.
