I have finally, after trying a lot of different clay bodies, found a
cone 6 clay body that I actually like using. (it is awaji porcelain
from Seattle Potters Supply) It throws well, joins well, feels like a
high fire clay, is strong, etc., and of course, being a 'porcelain' is
white, nice and white. However, but, (there had to be some snag), every
glaze that I have used that does not craze on other clay bodies, crazes
on this one, even Tony Hanson's clear, which didn't start crazing until
three days after it had been out of the kiln, and his matt which is a
wonderful cone 6 glaze surface. I bisque fire to Cone 07 in the kiln
sitter, and glaze fire to Cone 7 in the kiln sitter, which in my kiln
means that respectively, senior cones 06 and 6 are 1/2 way down. (3
oc'clock). I have tried soaking, and not soaking, no perceptible
differences occur.
Question?? Does anyone have any ideas for 'stretching' the glazes so as
not to have them craze without changing the fired surfaces? I have
tried using a glaze calculation program, but have to learn how to use
the program before it will be any use to me, and I would much rather be
making pots, and I suppose glaze tests.
June, in B.C. where it is finally sunny, but the mosquitos are a
plague.
