treadle wheel plans

This is for the person who was looking for a plan for treadle wheels. I
found plans for that wheel in Claylinks. Hope you find it! I am
particularly fond of treadle wheels myself. The plans call for the
stand to be made out of wood, but if you can find a welder, I am almost
positive that you could have it made out of metal. Good Luck! B

I can personally vouch for the plans shown at the URL below. I found
the book they are taken from -- The Self Reliant Potter -- in a library
about 14 years ago. Great book, now out of print I believe. If anyone
knows where to get a copy, I'd love to find it again. Anyway, I built
the wheel, still have it and use it in combination with my Shimpo
electric. I keep the treadle wheel outside under an open shelter.
There is nothing quite so pleasant as sitting outside on a warm day,
left leg setting the back and forth rythm, and working with soft clay,
knowing that the only fuel being used is whatever I've had to eat
lately. Great wheel, much the same as used by Bernard Leach, Warren
MacKenzie and a host of others. It is important to find a good
blacksmith/welder to make the shaft. I had to fiddle with mine to get
it true, but did without too much work.

I found a copy of "The Self-Reliant Potter" and scanned in the pages
containing instruction for building a treadle wheel These plans are much
clearer than the earlier set. It includes photographs of the assembly
process.

Just an observation and warning about those treadle wheel plans. I made one
of my own design almost exactly like the one referred to below and
encountered one major problem. Beef up the section of the shaft making the
journal that the kickbar attaches to. If it isn't made of some very thick,
strong steel or reinforced with a triangle of steel welded above and below
the journal, the shaft will bend and your wheelhead will wobble. Its fun
trying to learn to center on that.

Once you adequately reinforce the shaft, the design works wonderfully. One
other note, I found a steel flywheel out of a catapillar that made a great
flywheel was balanced, cheap and didn't have to make it myself.
