yixing pottery demonstrations

Dear Clayarters,
Two distinguished potters from Yixing, Wu Ming and Gu Mei-qun, have been
in Honolulu for the past week as participants in the East-West Ceramics
Collaboration. The program here will be over on August 8, and they are
scheduled to do a workshop for a local ceramics group on Sunday August 9.
I am sending this message to clayart to find out if any ceramics groups
either in the San Francisco or Los Angeles area might be interested in
having them come over from Honolulu to do workshops in your area.
Both artists are distinguished as teapot makers, and their demonstrations
are quite remarkable -- specially made tools, interesting local (Chinese)
clay, and so on. They would require airfare to and from Honolulu
(although they might just fly directly back to Shanghai via Seoul from LA
if that works out). They should also receive room and board while at your
workshop. An honorarium is definitely in order. These can all be
negotiated, however. Their English is minimal, definitely minimal.
However, so much of what they show does not require translation.
It might be feasible for several groups to get together and sponsor them.
They would definitely be available for the week of August 9 - 16, and
perhaps later, depending on interest generated.
Please email me directly if this is a possibility for any of you, and we
can work from there. If there are several groups closeby who are
interested, I will put them in touch with each other also.
Wu Ming is from the Yixing Purple Sand Factory Research Institute, and has
exhibited in Japan (won a prize at Mino) and in Amsterdam. Gu Mei qun is
a master potter from Purple Sand Factory #5. Both factories are near
Dingshu, just south of Yixing City. This is really an excellent
opportunity to see how Yixing teapots are made -- they are so incredibly
well-crafted, and the techniques to insure that lids fit closely,
footrings are neat, spout, lid and handle are aligned, and so on are very
interesting.
Please respond to me personally if you are interested in this opportunity.

Dear Clayarters,
Still hoping to find a ceramics group in the California area (between SF
and LA!) who would like to host two potters from Yixing. They are really
unique and the knowledge and experience gained from them would be well
worth it. If airfare plus a small honorarium is too much, make an offer.

Suzanne,

Try contacting Barbara Brown. She's in Sunnyvale which is not quite in
the area you mention, but she's arranged many visits and workshops,
perhaps she could help.
