barium in terra-cotta clay

Barium is used to stop scumming on some terra-cotta clays . Scumming is a
white efflorescence on the fired ware, from i think magnesium salts in the
clay. The old potters who trained me ,said not to use barium containing
clays , because the barium is absorbed through the skin & is poisonous.
