OK, James. You put a limit on it! jeez.
So. I like Clay and Glazes, it's my bible and has been for forty
plus years.... and I love John Britt's book because he made it so I
can understand and it's SO beautifull, and the "Mastering ^6Glazes"
will clearly be a new bible, altho I got pinholes! ( How can I have
pinholes will all that slow down- firing?)
But my REAL all time favorites are Leach's " A Potter's Book " and "
The Unknown Craftsman" by Yanagi ( a wonder of a read) and Japanese
Painted Porcelain, which keeps me dreaming and SO humble, and that
Big book of Hamada, called Hamada pottery by Leach, which is
another dream of a book , just to look at .
When I was first starting out I looked at 'Norton's Ceramics' a
lot, and it's a good reference too. There are so many! Zakin's , when
I first started to have to fire electric. (again, thank you John and
Roy!)
That's not a list! oh, well. Thanks for this, James, It's SUCH FUN!

Well, drat!! I apologize, James. Your posted books
went all screwy for me, too. BUT it did appear as if
it would work when I sent it to my computer directly.
However, obviously, when it went to the List.......... whamo!
and lots of other bad words.

The book list is done=2C but thus far we have had no luck in posting it to =
the list. Because of apparent limitations and quirks in both Hotmail and L=
istserv=2C everything we try comes out a jumbled mess.
As a work around=2C I have posted the complete bibliography in spreadsheet =
format to a hidden page on my website. There are two versions of the list=
=2C one sorted alphabetically by author=2C and the other sorted by "votes".=
You can download both at www.jamesfreemanstudio.com/clayart. You must go=
directly to this page=2C as there is no link to it from my home page. The=
re is also a word document called Clayart Bibliography Read Me that contain=
s the background information on the project and where I suggest we go from =
here=2C and is the text that we have been trying to post.
For any who are curious about how I waste my time and clay=2C there are als=
o links on that page to my main website (which hasn't been updated in some =
time so now contains mostly older work)=2C and to a Flickr page I threw tog=
ether for another clayarter containing a few of my newer pieces.
I will still try to figure out a way to post the writeup. If any of you ar=
e able to post to the list while keeping your formatting intact=2C and are =
willing to try to post the writeup=2C please feel free to do so (clear it w=
ith Joyce off list first so she doesn't get deluged with attempts). Either=
download it from the web page=2C or email me off list and I will send it t=
o you.
Thanks again to everyone who participated.

Came through great for me (on a Mac). You did a great job and the
report looks very interesting--I have not had a chance to really study
it yet. Thanks for going to the trouble to do this for all of us.

I went to your website, and could view the list;however my HP printer
refused to print it! So i just copied the info I wanted. Thanks for going to all
this trouble. By the way, if a book got less than 5 votes, I guess it was not
included?

Hi James,
I read the whole list and thank you for all the work compiling it. I had some how missed though that you all wanted a quick synopsis. With the exception of Hopper's book my picks were all on hand building.
The Mary Roger's book isn't the run of the mill hand book on hand building. It explores ancient hand building traditions then looks at the evolution into a modern form. She especially concentrates on organic, natural forms in porcelain. My copy has drool marks on all the photos of her work! Technical information abounds as well. I got a good starting place for a ^10 clear glaze and "how to" on a number of porcelain working methods.
Betty Blandino's book is similar but sticks with stoneware and earthenware. It highlights just how far coils can take you.
The "Pottery Without a Wheel" by Ball and Loos has the best section on texturing slabs for beginners or when one needs a bit of inspiration.
The "How To" part is clear but leaves room for the individual to move off into their own creative zone.
Hope this helps. --Kim H.
