favorite book list - final effort

I am leaving town for a few days & will be tabulating the final results
of the book survey when I get back Sunday. I have not received many
replies fron you "lurkers", but lots from the "active posters". In
order to make this informal survey the most meaningful, it would be really
great to hear from all the lurkers!!! Please send me a list of your three
favorite pottery books, the ones you can't live without, title and author.
I will publish the results at the end of next week. Sudden trip out of
town has popped up to interrupt my original schedule, so this is the last
call.

Amy

My two favorite books are "Finding One's Way With Clay" by Paulus Behernson
and "A Potter's Companion" compiled and edited by Ronald Larsen. The third
book would have to be about 15 titles so I'll stop at these two. The Shards
sections of "Companion" remind me why I do this for a living on those days
when I have too many questions.

AMY,
How about adding "Ceramic Glazes" by Parmelee & Harman, "The potter's
alternative" by Harry Davis, and "Substitutions for Raw Ceramic Materials"
by Edouard Bastarache.

I've never seen this book of Nigel Barley's but I have read his book
"The Innocent Anthropologist". It's about his first anthropological
trip to Cameroon, and is one of the funniest books I've ever come
across. We loaned it to someone who took it on a vacation to the
beach, and passed it around. Said you could always tell where on the
beach the book was by the whoops of laughter. Check it out.

All of the books I've seen recommended are good books for the technical side
of pottery. But what about the soul?
For the soul of the potter I vote for The Invisible Core: A Potter's Life and
Thoughts by Margerite Wildenhain (out of print, I'm afraid), Finding Ones Way
With Clay by Paulus Berensohn (back in print), And any and all of Peter Lanes
books on Pottery, If nothing else, just for the pictures!

One of my favorite "spiritual" pottery books is Zen and the Art of Pottery by
Kenneth Beittel.
