There is a group of potters that operate a co-op with a gallery called Sarah
Creek Potters. They are located at Gloucester Point at the York River
Bridge, which is a stone's throw from Yorktown. Over in Mathews County,
about a 45 minute drive from Williamsburg, is a pottery called The Poddery,
operated by Karen and Robert Podd. They have a nice studio and gallery
area. It is in a town called Foster. She studied in Japan with the son of
one of Japan's Living Treasures. He makes the dragons that dignataries put
on their roofs to ward off evil spirts. I think that's how the story goes.
Anyone with more knowledge feel free to elaborate. Well, getting back to the
son. Apparently he will take his father's place upon his death, but in the
meantime he can make these sculptures but cannot sell any in Japan. Outside
of Japan he can sell. Some of Karen's more creative pieces have an Asian
influence. Of course, she does tiles, drawer pulls. . . too. Hope this
helps. Barbara
