Dear Readers,

When I took over my studio from a former pottery, I found on hand a number
of 100 lb. bags of WYOMING BOND (Bendtonite). Does anyone out there have a
good reliable clay body recipe that I can put this clay to good use? . . .
or am I to use it where ever Bentonite is called for in a formulae? Any
helps, hints, would be welcome.

Hi Lewellen!

Bentonite is usually an additive for an existing clay or glaze recipie. It is
used to help lighten a clay body (make it moreso plastic) or to help keep
glaze minerals in suspension (to avoid caking or "glopping" of glaze
minerals).

Best wishes!

I hope the cricket who shares this room makes the stay a temporary one. I
wonder how to summon the aid of a nearby black widow spider?

Milton,

thanks for the reply. I now realize that what i have is really a generic
form of bentonite and that is how I will use it. I have been having some
trouble too with native clays as when they dry they like to S crack in the
bottom even though I never have this trouble with my usual stonewares.
Purhaps a bit of bentonite would help for plasticity but then someone told
me that some of the forms of indigenous clays are actually (bentonite) in
which case additions wouldn't help at all. I need to do some more
experiments with that one. anyway thanks for your help and I understand
the Wyoming bond now!
