I concede that there are some academics who may not =22know=22 =22many =
things about
production pottery.=22 However, I know many who do have experience with
production pottery either through having apprenticed with a production =
potter
(as I did) or having been independant studio potters prior to going into
academia. Is it possible that production potters are ignorant of academic
concerns such as curriculum development, syllabi, assessment/grading, =
advising,
etc,...?

From the comments I've heard and the behaviour I've observed, I believe =
there is
animosity that exists between academics and independant studio artists. I do=
my
part to ameliorate the situation by reaching out to independant studio =
potters
and inviting them to lecture/demonstrate to our students and exhibit in our
gallery.

Steve Jepson is a marvelous thrower---the best technical thrower that I
have ever seen---you could not find someone better to teach you to
throw. I have known him and many of his students ( George Parker,
Michael Rutkowski, Michael Galleta, Ralph Rankin, and many more) for
over 25 years---their pots do not look like his.

When I left graduate school in 1972, I spent a week with Steve at his
studio in Geneva and learned many things about production pottery which
academics just do not know. If you want to learn how to throw and make
pots efficiently, Steve is your man.

Good point. Isn't the main reason for studying at the university is to
get a university job? A production potter doesn't need to learn
curriculum development, syllabi, etc.
