^10 clear glaze

updated fri 22 aug 08

Can anyone suggest a ^10 clear glaze which holds cobalt or blue underglazes
in a crisp line? I've been slowly working my way through the clear glazes
posted in the archives, with no luck so far. Thought maybe someone would
help me with a shortcut! I draw on porcelain, and fire in oxidation: I
would also like the clay to fire white under the glaze.
Thanks!
Marcia

Hi-- Some underglazes tend to spread or droop when glaze is applied. Is
this what you're talking about? I do a second bisque-- it doesn't have to
be too hot, just to "set" the underglazes--^012 or so. Hope this is
helpful. Lana in MA

Dear Marcia,

Here's a cone 10 clear glaze I've been using for years.

Bauer's Clear

Cornwall stone 80
Whiting 15
Gerstly Bor. 6
Bentonite 3

Hope it works for you. Vikki

Lana:
I do bisque on my underglazes - I've smeared an elaborate design once too
many times when I didn't! That isn't the problem, however - it looks like
the blue bleeds a little into the glaze, and then moves a little, flowing
just a smidgen down the pot, so you loose those sharp edges! Doesn't
happen with any other color, just blue. I have yet to find a glaze which
doesn't do this, and I've tested lots of beautiful clear glazes!

Thanks to all those who sent recipes - I'll be busy testing!

Marcia:
I'm curious, what do you mean by the phrase "I do bisque on my
underglazes"? Not trying to be smart, I just would very much like to know.

Just thought I should mention that Cornwall Stone comes in several varities
- see "Out of the Earth into the Fire" by Obstler. They all vary in
refractoriness so this glaze will vary in looks - depending on the type you
get.

I have reformulated - replacing some of the Cornwall with g200 - Custer
will work as well. Don't know if it will look the same but it will cost
less.

Is it durable? Beats me - the limits I use disagree on this one - If I had
to guess I would say yes.

Cone 10 clear - UNTESTED.

When I bought my very used kiln I was given this wonderful glaze formula that
works every time. I love it. It is called Shaners Clear:
Flint 31.9
Custer Feldspar 31.9
Whiting 16.8
EPK 14.1
Dolomite 5.3
add Bentonite 2%
^9-^10 oxy or reduction. Good luck. Jeri

Thank you for the suggestion of thinning down a clear glaze! What a
simple yet brilliant idea! Do you have a cone 10 clear glaze recipe
that you
have done this with before and are willing to share?
Many thanks,
Pam

Back home, I used something I got from Shirley Johnson: L G Clear
(light green clear.) I used it under synth. Mashiko kaki.

I believe it is a variation of the
Leach cone 8 1234:

Custer 27
OM4 14
Whiting 20.5
Flint 31.5
Kaolin 7
