Hi Jenny and All,
I fire B-mix 5 to ^6 ox. always, no problem. I bisque to ^06, BUT...with
my latest batch of B-mix I've been getting nasty blisters and over-fluxing
with my blue. This may be premature, because I haven't had time yet to
test the theory since finding the info, but, after much hair-pulling and
thanks to the Clayart Archives and a wonderfully clear and succinct
explanation by Ron Roy (Thanks, Ron!!!) I believe I've tracked the problem
to too much iron in the clay body, the Fix being to bisque slower from 700
to 900C and with more oxygen.(bisque to ^05 ?) (apparently, I've been
creating some reduction by packing tight and closing up the kiln when I
turn it to high , firing fast from @ 600C up). Anybody else out there
with this sort of problem lately, with B-mix? I think this batch came from
New York, not California. I'd love to hear from other "B-mixers" on this.
Andi in PA, where
we're gettin' out the woolies.

I started having a similiar problem a while back with a batch of B-Mix5,
and I incorporated a carbon soak into the cycle(bisque firing) and that
seems to have helped. Before, the glaze firing resulted in tiny craters,
usually in the bottom or the very edge of the pots.I thought it was the
glaze at first, but it also did it with other glazes that up to that
point had been trouble free. Now I hold the temperature at around 825C
for about an hour, and it seems to have helped. I'm not sure where the
clay is from,I'm assuming California since I'm on the West coast.I don't
know if this is an ongoing problem, or one that turns up every so often,
but I do the soak now just as a matter of course.Better safe that
sorry.!!
