another two sculpting\fire questions

Hello, I asked the question about the lion sculpture, using small rolls of
newspaper for armiture. Besides needing small armiture for thin legs I was
also looking to see what the newspaper would do. I saw the most beautiful
pot at a show. The pot was terracotta? with beautiful black carvings and
undercarvings I couldn't keep my eyes off it. The potter said that he had
introduced carbon into the firing . It was strong and soft at the same time,
really beautiful. I've done a lot of carving and texture on the lion aiming
for realistic fur and mane. I was hoping to get the same darkness in the
undercuts by using the newsprint for both. After all carbon is carbon right?
You use ripped newsprint in raku firing and get the piece to absorb both the
smoke and carbon, right? The man had said,he did not paint or glaze the
pieces at all , and the carvings looked like the bottom of a raku pot. It
was really wonderful. I hope this isn't a dumb question . I really love this
stuff , there are so many things I want to do It seems like the possibilities
are endless! I also want to make a dragonfly out of clay, with glass wings,
I read that you can make a mold out of terracotta, dust with whiting and
slump glass in the kiln. Has anybody done this? My kiln is 35 years old,
made out of firebrick , It's been dormat the past 20 years, untill I got it. 6
mo. ago, Its hand made and so far has done whatever I've asked of it.[cords
are wearing out though] I've basically no knowlege of this stuff as of 6 mo
ago, and have been asking questions all over town [which no one seems to
know] I'm very gratefull for all your help. CLAYART has really fed
my need. Thanks Sincerely, Donna
