Glad you asked...

The Arrowmont school of Arts & Crafts will host a summer craft tour to
Ecuador July 17-31, 1999.

The following is an excerpt from the brochure which will, I hope, help
fill in the information needed about this trip.

....We will journey to the small South American country of Ecuador to take a
close look at the Crafts and Artisans living and working in the Andean
range and in the Amazon basin. This tour is designed for people with a
sense of adventure who are interested in gaining an appreciation and a
broad perspective of the crafts produced in Ecuador. On this tour you
will visit artists' studios, galleries, local markets and museums. In
addition, you will have a hands-on workshop with the Quichua Indians
living in the upper Amazon basin region.

The tour will be led by myself and Bill Griffith (Assistant
Director/Arrowmont). I think this will be an exciting trip since we will
have ample opportunity to see firsthand how and where the crafts are
produced in Ecuador. This will have us visit small workshops as
well as provide opportunity to interact with the artists'. The Amazon
portion alone (of which I am most excited) will be an experience second
to none. A van ride through the Andean range, followed by a canoe ride
down the Rio Napo will place us in a village where we will have the
opportunity to work in a workshop situation while we are directed by
local indians. The areas of focus in the Amazon will be ceramics,
basketmaking and woodworking. Anyone interested in learing more about
the ceramics of the jungle may wish to see the video I was involved in
producing titled:

Jatun Molino: A Pottery Village in the Upper Amazon Basin.

This is available through the Potters Shop, or myself direct.

This trip is similar to one we did 2 years ago that was a great success.
Participants had an exciting time while experiencing some of Ecuador's
finest crafts and craftspeople. Of course, plan to bring home some fine
examples of craftwork for your collection. And the food was great!

The cost of the trip is $1850.00 per person/double occpancy. Space
limited to 20. Most meals included as well as all ground, air and boat
transportation as well. Trip originates in Miami.

Contact Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts for more detailed information
about the trip (itinerary, costs, etc.), or feel free to ask me about it
personally for more detailed information about Ecuador. Arrowmont's address is:

Hope this helps, and I hope to see others from Clayart on this trip!

Take care,

Joe
