I found this quote in A Potter's Companion by Ronald Larsen, pg 123:
"In a book about the Post-Impressionists, I came across the statement by
Renoir, which said something like: "If half the would-be-painters in France
were transformed into craftsmen, it would benefit both painting and the
crafts: the number of painters would be decreased, and the decorative arts
would get people." This statement gave me the courage to change my whole
aim. It summarized my own thinking, and the fact that my ideas were endorsed
by a great painter made a deep impression. Why not a potter? Pots can be
used, they have function. Even a bad pot has some use, but with a bad
painting, there is nothing you can do with it except throw it away.
