Does anyone know a source for non-plastic Bats that will fit a Shimpo wheel?=
I
don't want to try to make them. Thank you.

I have used plaster of paris bats for years. Mix up some plaster and
pour into old pie tins. Thanksgiving dinner pumpkin pies are a good
source for used tins. After drying for about four weeks, they can be
attached to the wheel head by sponging some thick slurry from the water
bucket onto the back of the bat, slide the bat around on the wheel head
for about 5 seconds and it just grabs hold. The bat will sit in between
the bat pins, no need to remove them. Once the bats are "seasoned" with
the slurry, just throw some water on the wheel and slide the bats
around. These bats are removed by prying up with a screwdriver. The
only drawback is the piece can't be recentered once the bat is
removed. I've had bats last 10 years, and I keep a set reserved for
white clay. Remove your pots from the bat within 24 hours to avoid over
drying the bottoms.

If there is a Lowe's anywhere near you, they sell round pieces of wood
that would be perfect for bats. The holes are not drilled yet, so you
can drill them in to the size you need. Then all you have to do is
polyurathane(sp) them to make them water proof. They seem to be the
same price as the plastic ones.

Take a bat that fits on your wheel
one of those plastic bats or a bat made of masonite
they are about 1/4 inch thick
goto your local clay supply place and buy a case of 6 inch unglazed white
tiles
mount the bat on the wheel and draw a 6 inch circle on the bat
cut a square out of the bat using the circle as the guide
and cut a small notch out of one of the sides of the cut out square
this is so you can stick a screwdriver in and lift the tile up
you might have to sand the cut out so the tiles will go in easily
but the tiles work great, they act like plaster, and you will find that you
can make a whole lot more stuff using these
if you cut the square out of a masonite bat, coat it with something
waterproof
I just bought a tube of 5 minute epoxy and did one side at a time. it worked
great

I get my bats from either Clay Art Center in Tacoma, WA, or Seattle
Pottery Supply. The # for Clay Art is 1-800-952-8030. I was just down
there yesterday picking up clay for some classes I teach, and noticed a
flyer on bat sizes and prices. I think this could get you in the right
direction.
