Thanks to all who responded to my request for favorite books. I have finished
ALL my traveling for the summer (I hope!) and will be tabulating the results
this week - after the mountain of laundry gets processed!!!

While I was in NC at the beginning of the month, I saw many beautiful pots,
but did not have a chance to actually visit any studios this year. We were
up near Penland, and are purchasing a few acres for "retirement" near there.

The Trillium Gallery in Little Switzerland has a new piece of work by
Maggie Jones, one of our "clayarters". She has made a bobcat sculpture out of
various of the local clays, so that all of the color in the piece is from
the clay itself. It was about a foot high, and was absolutely stunning!
Way to go Maggie!!!

I went with my husband to Santa Barbara last weekend and met a wonderful
local potter - Jerry Kry. He sells only retail, and has a booth on the
beach every weekend. Really nice guy! Cone 12 porcelain, beautiful
colors. Laguna makes up his special Kry porcelain recipe - this was the
best porcelain body I have ever touched!

Then, the highlight of the trip - we drove up to Ojai. Being geographically
illiterate about the west coast, I had not know that Ojai was anywhere near
our destination, so we drove up totally unprepared as to where to go (darn
it!), but we found two galleries of interest in downtown. The first one's
name I have forgotten (sorry), but we saw several pieces of Candone Wharton's
raku that were impressive.

The second gallery was Nest, and they had several dozen pots and several
dozen drawings by Beatrice Wood. I was really blown away! The least expensive
of her works was $900, so they were all still there when we left, but to
actually look at her work in "the flesh" rather than a photograph, was
such a moving experience! The other thing about the trip that was memorable
was that while we were in the ice cream shop, we found pages and pages of
the local paper pinned to the bulletin board about Beatrice and her life
in Ojai. Since I had just read "I Shock Myself" while in NC two weeks ago,
I was really caught up in this.

Amy:
Thanks for compiling the book list. It should be interesting.

Regarding your trip to the Ojai. I am sorry you did not know about Otto
Heino. A visit there is a must. He and his wife, Vivika [now with the
Kiln Gods] live in Beatrice's house before she moved to Topa Topa
Mountain. Otto and Vivika are a piece of history. They did a lot to
help Beatrice develop her skills as a potter.
Otto is 84 and still making pots. Big ones. He has a car kiln [9
burners on each side], a big cat arch salt kiln and a wood kiln.
Currently, he is making large jars with a iron yellow glaze which are
being snapped up by collectors at about 40k per. He is a great person
and welcomes visitors. Just call first. Anyone going there will find it
well worth the trip.

Hi Amy
Beatrice Wood is my IDOL.!!! I was so sad to hear of her death earlier this
year.I have read her autobiography as well .She was such a remarkable
person. I envy you seeing her pots in the "flesh". Hopefully I'll get the
chance to visit the USA one day and see some for myself.
Meanwhile her beautiful lustred goblets and bowls are inspiration for my own
work
Lucky lucky you!!!
