break in kiln element

Does anyone know if a broken electric kiln coil (the coiled wire rapped around
the inside of the brick) can be welded back together. If so, what type of
soldering rod would be used? With tempertures in the kiln up to 2000 degrees
most metal rods, like silver solder, I suppose would melt.

The first time I had a break in a kiln element years ago, I ordered a new
one from Skutt, but while waiting for it's arrival, I unplugged the kiln
and very gently overlapped the broken pieces. They apparently self-weld
during firing, because since then I have done this at least 5 times ( in
different spots) and still haven't used the new element. I realize I'm
pushing my luck here, but it's worked for me. I sort of dread the job of
installing new elements...that's why I've done the overlapping bit. You
very gently stretch each end first, then overlap about 3 revolutions worth.

This is the 2nd day of my membership in Clayart....gives me a really
"connected" feeling! I see a lot of subjects I could respond to, but
must ration my impulse to put in my 2 cents worth , otherwise I'd do more
writing than potting!
