Hi
Can anyone tell me where one can get a supply of cane for making handles,
much like the handles that are on Fong Choo's teapots,Ceramics Monthly Dec.
98, page 8, or like Dannon Rhudy's teapot, Ceramics Monthly Dec. 98, page41.
Thanks

At NCECA in March, I bought the video about cane handles from Sheila Clennell. I eventually made some pots with lugs on them so that I could try the method. I did order the supplies from Sheila. Weellll, I watched the video again and made the first handle on a pot with lugs but would remain with me--not real happy with the runny glaze on it. That first one, took a while but the practice was worth the effort. The second one went quickly and is lovely. I took it, proudly, to an art league meeting that was 'show and tell' for the things we had done during the summer. As I worked on these, I came up with many other ideas to do with the cane. I have done a series of crosses and learned so much in researching them that I have given short talks on the history and kinds. Anyhow, I have an order for a cross that will go in an arched wall recess. He said I have free rein on what I want to make and he will pay me. It will have cane incorporated in the design. I do some sculpture and have ideas about some use for cane there. Has anyone else tried the methods for handles or other decorative projects? I am so grateful to Sheila for sharing her talents and different ways of using the cane.

I've been making Sheila's handles ..... very awkward for me at first, =
but coming along ..... Where I'm having most success is as decorative =
small handles on ends of trays, winding around and reinforcing the clay =
handles...... and weaving the reed in and out of holes in round trays =
with beads attached to each hole. I really like this look. I think it =
was wise, however, to order the cane from Sheila for these first =
"experiments" so that I know the size of the reed is right, the colored =
dyes are the ones she's using etc. Actually, in an order there was =
enough material for a great, great many handles. Believe me, if I can =
manage this, any of you can do the same ..... Sheila's video is very =
detailed and specific. (That's Sheila Clennell by the way, akin to Tony =
only by marriage.....)

i am a basketmaker as well and would be happy to send along samples to
anyone who would like. samples of different thicknesses of round reed and
different sizes of caning. i usually use medium fine and #2 & #3 round reed,
although i have examples of other sizes laying around. i also could send
samples of different sizes of flat reed, flat oval and half round. i have
access to a site that gives formulas for creating custom colors using ritt
dye. always be sure to use a mordant in your dye bath for best color.
let me know off list and i will get your mailing info.

Hi Billie,
Last month I took a basket making class. I have made 3 baskets, mind you
they are tiny 2-3" cedar and raffia baskets. I really enjoy it. My question
is what is the best online basket supplier.
I went to your web site... beautiful work!
Thanks

Dorothy, a mordant is a substance used to intensify and "set" a color. Using
a mordant (salt and vinegar are two commonly used ones) will allow you to
get deeper colors, which will remain true longer. If you look at a box of
ritt dye you will see they instruct you to use a certain amount of salt in
your dye bath. The salt is the mordant. Not sure what Webster's definition
is ;-)

Dorothy,
A "Mordant" is the scientific name for one of my wife's moods. I have no
idea how this relates to cane handles.

You are too funny. I'll be careful, don't want to have a "mordant" mood.
Thanks

I must second Vicki's glowing review of Sheila's video on cane handles. =
It is great! Very clear, concise, wonderful step by step instruction =
for a variety of applications. I put these handles on my teapots and =
people love them. I have dyed cane, added little extras like wire and =
beads, and tried out different wrapping styles all from what I took from =
the video. I sent Shelia and Tony a pic and a thank you for their =
efforts but would like to say again, THANKS. Buy the video, its worth =
it!
Peace,
