Dannon,
Thanks for the information but how do you clean the pots without water? I was
busy formulating theories about soluble salts. Glad to know it's so simple as
water but the pots are really dirty when I take them out of the ashes. What if
I wash them, let them dry for a day or so, heat them and then wax?

If you wash the pots with water, then dry them thoroughly; sit them
in the bisque kiln on low, let them warm in there for a few hours
or overnight, or warm in your oven.
Pots can be cleaned with Johnson's paste wax - it is a cleaner
as well as a wax. Brush all loose particles from the pot, rub
on some wax, rub it off. Pot'll be clean enough to be going on with.
Give a second coat, buff with a cloth or a soft shoe brush, the kind
they use at shoe shine stands. Work great.
Regards,
Dannon

Lynne...this works....do it all the time with my pit fired work. Wash them
up...let dry for a day...put in a 150 to 200 oven with the door open for
several hours....then wax when hot....carefully. No white beard/ white
scumb on them yrs later. Sometimes I heat them in the oven and let them sit
for another 24 hours to really make sure they are dry through and through.
Have fun...As Always in Clay Peggy
