I have a cone 10 black glaze that I have been using lately, but it has a
problem. It bubbles when the flame touches the pot in the kiln. I have the
glaze ingredients below. Does anybody in cyberspace have a good true black
(not brown black) cone 10 glaze to share with me that will work well in
reduction??

Hi, Farshad,
Try this one:
Larry's Black
Custer 42
Whiting 13
Barium carb. 2
EPK 8
Silica 20
Cobalt carb. 3
Iron Oxide 4
Manganese Diox. 2
Chrome Ox. 1
This is a real black black, glossy with a little bit of oil-spot
sometimes, and a very long firing range. Like from cone 7 to cone 11.
If you put a little lithium carbonate, maybe 3-5 %, it will be a cone
5 glaze.

Hey...
here is a black glaze that i have used that is black.. for sure.... i think
it is a val cushing glaze....
V.C. BLACK SATIN (may not be food safe)
cone 10
Kona F-4-----------------20
custerspar---------------20
dolomite------------------15
talc-------------------------13
whiting----------------------2
ball clay(om#4)---------10
flint--------------------------20
plus
Chrome oxide-----------1
RIO--------------------------3
Manganese Dioxide---2
cobalt oxide--------------3
PS.... the only reason i don't use this glaze is because of all the poisen in
it.. and food safe issue.... but i have used it and love the way it looks..
and it is black....
plus with 3% cobalt oxide it aint cheap........
i am working on a black glaze that may be food safe... i fire all the test
pieces this weekend.....don't even know if it will turn out black.....

a great, soft black which is velvety is 100 Albany clay and 6% cobalt
carb. That is if you can get your hands on the Albany. Looks great
fired in reduction in the cooler section of a cone 10 kiln. good luck.

There is a variation of that glaze called St.. Johns black
Albany slip 65
Neph sye 35
cobalt carb 5
here is a Albany substitute
Dolomite .94
soda ash .38
whiting 4.25
red art 94.43
so the new formula would be
Dolomite .611
soda ash .247
whiting 2.76
red art 61.38
Neph sye 35
cobalt carb 5
or you can use Alberta slip that is sold through the Archie bray foundation
clay business in the classifieds of ceramics monthly
good luck

I make my Shiny Black with:
Sheffield's Albany Substitute 100
Colbalt 5
enough epsom salts to keep it from settling
This is good in a wide range of cones; I use c9 ox.

Leona,
Is this glaze applied to bique-ware or green ware?
