cone 5 b mix

Hello,

I have just purchased some Laguna cone 5 B-mix. I usually fire to cone 6 and
I am wondering if this body can take the extra heat if I fire it to cone 6
instead of cone 5. Has anyone has ever fired this clay to cone 6? I would
love to hear about the results.

Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Jenny,

I have been working with the cone 5 B-mix and successfully firing to cone 6
each time. When I first began using it, however, there were those on the list
that had problems with bloating at this temperature. I haven't experienced
this problem personally.

I've used B-Mix 5 to cone 6 for the last three years. My firing schedule
slows right down between 1180C to 1205C (30C per hour),and then I lower
the temperature to 1195C and do a 20 minute soak which brings the cone
down to a perfect Cone 6.I've never experienced any bloating or such
doing it this way, but I know a while back there was some discussion
about B-Mix 5 and someone wrote in to say they had some bloating
problems after Cone 5.Perhaps the firing schedule has something to do
with this??Good luck with it.

Hi Jenny:

I've used cone 5 B-mix for a few years in electric firings in the cone 6
range with no problems.

Jenny, I have fired the cone 5 b-mix to cone six quite a few times. I found
that it would have a tendency to stick to the kiln shelf, but other than that
was ok. cone six is probably a definite upper limit.

Jennie -
I use it all the time and fire at Cone 6 all the time. I really like the
clay - smooth and easy to throw. Bisques to a great white color. I bisque
to cone 08. Glazes seem to work very well and have enjoyed using this clay.
Several people in our Arrowsmith Potters Guild also use Cone 5 B-Mix. Good
Luck!!!

I think your kiln temps must be off. Are you using cones? In my
experience, by full cone 7, Cone 5 Bmix will start to blister a bit.
It's just great at Cone 6.

I use cones in every firing. I know what I am doing. It could be that
I got a bad batch of Bmix--as I said I have only used 2 boxes--but
others have told me of similar results. Are you sure your pots are
not leaking?

Hi Bob,

I know others have said this, but I think I can confirm that you're
firing hotter than Cone 6 if you're going to 2232 with a 20 minute
hold. I get 6 over and 7 at 10 o'clock on my top shelf when i fire
to 2180. For some reason when I first got the kiln, I had it in my
mind that I needed to fire to 2200 to get to cone 6 (were we looking
at the same erroneous chart). At that temp, I was getting bloating
in the B Mix 5 -- and was getting over firing in MC6G glazes.
Finally wised up and realized my error -- with help from some on the
list of course. Since changing top temp to 2190/2180, no bloating
at all.

Have you tried putting cones on the shelf to see what cone you are
actually getting on the top shelf?

Just a reminder that we should assume every thermocouple reads differently
- sometimes by over 100 degrees. Basing anything on the temperatures they
deliver is probably going to be counter productive.

Cones are much more reliable.
