John,
I was most interested in your post describing how a controlled cooling
results in better iron reds. I fire in a Skutt 818 without a controller or
a pyrometer, so I have no way of knowing the temperature of the kiln at any
point in time. My two kiln dials start at low, then have numbers from one
to seven, then high. My glaze firing schedule is 4 to 5 hours at low ('til
the the elements are glowing red), then 2 hours at # 2 on the dials, 2 hours
at #4, then high until the witness cones are where I want them. Then I turn
both dials to low for about an hour, then off. I have noticed that the iron
red pieces on the lower shelves are redder, presumably from the slower
cooling, as you suggest. I will now experiment with an even slower cool
down, but do you (or anyone) have any specific suggestions for a cooling
schedule for my situation? Thanks.
Judy
