copies from slides?

updated wed 2 dec 98

Several months ago I thought someone said that one could place slides on
a photocopier and get color enlargements. I didn't save the email
because it sounded straight forward but I just tried it and the copies
come out black. I've searched two archives services and can't find the
email.

Does anyone else remember this discussion? I think it was in response to
someone asking the cheapest way to make color brochures.

Hi,

I believe that some photo places now have "copier" machines to make copies
from slides/negs -- it isn't a regular copy machine. I recently had some
copies made from slides at a photo counter in a drug store to save money
(usually have them made at a custom lab, which is pretty expensive) and got
miserable results -- got my money back and won't do that again!
My brochures are done with color copies. I am fortunate to have friends with
scanners who can scan from a slide, but unfortunately that friend is not close
and it would entail sending slides to him which I don't like to do unless I
have dupes. So I am stuck spending some $ to have my custom lab do scans.
From the print he makes me from the scan, I have color copies done and they
are great.
Hope that helps,
Karen in Sonoma

Cheryl,
I have had color copies made from slides on several occasions. I
have found the resulting prints to be extremely variable in quality
depending on the machine and the skill of the operator. Don't try to
do this yourself on a color copier, unless you have all day to play
with it and are willing to throw away the first dozen or so. And even
at its best, I wouldn't consider the prints good enough for a
portfolio or brochure. They're fine if you need to send someone an
image and don't want to spend the money or time for good prints, and
you don't need to make a good first impression.

Cheryl - NOT on the copier as you found out. Phone around starting
w/ Kincos or a professional lab - yellow pages. There are set ups
which connect a slide projection to some kind of color copier.
If all else fails write me back - I have a friend who knows about
this in Detroit. Karen Gringhuis

Talk to your local Kinkos about what is possible, or with local
professional photo/film processor...there have lots of info about what is
possible with slides & computers & copiers.

Cheryl,
You can go to a Kinko's copy center and they can do it for you. It is a
special feature they do on their color copier but it costs about 5.00 for a
setup charge and then the cost of the copy. there are scanners that can make
prints from slides but it must have that feature. If you can scan from prints
there are many programs available that you cam produce inexpensive brochures
and then print from a color copier.

Cheryl -
Most of the larger Kinkos stores have a special color copier which will make
high-quality 8 1/2x11 copies from a color slide. Cost me four bucks for the
first copy from each slide and a buck for each additional copy from the same
slide. Some copy places claim to have a frame which will hold a color slide
on the copier bed, and using the magnification feature will give a color
copy from a slide. But these images are always terrible - grainy and
distorted. At any copy service, if you are not sure about their equipment
for making copies from slides, ask to see a sample copy first, and then
decide if you want to go through with it.

Hi,
In Walnut Creek, Longs Drugs, has a machine, I can't remember the make,
but it will take your photo and make a copy of it on photo quality paper
and enlarge it or reduce it. The color is almost perfect. I've done 3 or
4 and have only had a problem with one of them! It costs about $8.00 per
copy. They usually give you a discount coupon which brings it down to
about $4.00.Mike

There is a company in Denver called Slideprinter. If your slide is 1) not
dark, actually slight underexposed makes the best prints and 2) doesn't
have lot of constrast, very light and very dark areas they can make some
great prints from 3x5 to 16.20 and even larger. My wife sells her
photography and shoots exclusivily slides. She's so particular about
exposure that print film with all the latitude isn't for her. It's a tour
de force thing. Her prints are beautiful and these folk do an awesome job.
They also pay the postage both ways. Their address is: The Slideprinter;
1145 W. Alameda; Denver, CO 80233 We don't keep their phone number and
have to call Directory assistance when she wants to talk to them (happens
rarely, maybe 3 times in 10+ years)

Hope this is a lead for you.

Most Alphagraphics stores and also Kinko's have excellent color copiers that
can make color copies from slides. You may need to do some phoning to make
sure. You may also have to make sure that the operator of the color copier
does some color adjusting until you get a copy that you are happy with. I have
found most Alphagraphics stores are happy to accommodate you, even with the
color adjusting. You may even find an independent copy shop with a color
copier with the color slide attachment--Canon makes the one I am familiar
with. We have one here in town--and it is a small town.

As a graphic artist who has "retired" to do my first love, sculpting with
clay, I can speak with a little authority on the subject. Usually the color
copies from slides (have never tried color copies from negs) are less than $2
each, depending on the quantity you get--price for each goes down with
quantity. Also from my experience, dupe slides should only be around $1 each.
I always worked with a photographer who also had a processing lab.

You can get good color copies from slides if the copier has an attachment
especially for this. Check Alphagraphics--I have found that Kinkos is much
more expensive and far less flexible in working to get the color right.

You are looking for a Canon Color Copier with color slide attachment. Also
check your town for an independent copy shop or even a local printer who might
have this equipment.
