Yahoo, I'm going to Baltimore! Is anybody else here going? I'd hate to
miss an opportunity to meet more clayarters in person!

I'm reeeeeeeeeeeally looking forward to this. Now if I can figure out
what to wear....

Lisa,

If you believe what is said about these things on Clayart, they are all
"Costume Balls" so wear your favorite potters costume.

Well, I'm back from Baltimore, and let me just say that doing that drive
by oneself is hell!

On the other hand, I would have been one sorry rascal had I missed out
on CBI. If you didn't go, you REALLLLLLLY missed out. I am attempting
to write an articl for ClayTimes about the conference - I hope I can do
it justice.
Wendy Rosen and Staff put on a well organized, information packed,
no-holds-barred in the Food department, held in a great place set of
workshops, and they are to be commended for a job done fabulously.
I got to meet other Clayarters (Sandra, Ruth, and a couple of others)
and other Clay Artists too (our table was full at the first lunch)

More info to come when I've had some sleep.

Hi Gang.
Yet another returnee from the CBI. I agree with everything Ruth said and can
only add it was a life-changing experience for me. I would urge anyone who is
currently not supporting themselves making pots, but would really like to do
it--GET YOURSELF DOWN to the next CBI. There was only one presentation that
was marginal, in my opinion, but even that had some good points.

Highly recommended. This program is for anyone who is serious about marketing
their crafts or interested in doing wholesale.

The Craft Business Institute was without any doubt the most
important education I have ever received regarding where I am, where I
want to go and how the heck to get there. I feel as though in one
little weekend I have gained knowledge that would have taken years to
learn in the "real world". Seminars covered many topics but the general
idea was: Yes, so you make stuff, you want to sell your stuff and you
want to make some money. You cannot sit in your booth at a craft show
after putting all your stuff on display and appear to say "My stuff is
great come and buy it". You must research your market, make a cohesive
line that reflects your style and market, accommodate your customer, and
in the end give them a reason to buy it, a reason they can't live
without it. I am sure that this is not news to many of the clayarters
out there, but for me as a beginner it was a true revelation. It was
all about BUSINESS and how do you make what you have a passion to do
into a profitable business.
Wendy Rosen and her staff, in addition to being fantastic hosts,
were there to share, to tell us their experiences, give us tips and get
us moving in the right direction. No one held back their little inside
secrets, they gave freely and fully of their time and minds, kind of
like clayarters.
I just had to share my thoughts and recommend this to anyone who
needed help like I did.

It would be helpful if those who wrote about these workshops would tell
where they were occurring (and if there would be others in various
locations). My husband and I are interested in any west coast events such
as this.

I hope this catches Wendy Rosen's attention. I would very
much like to have a set of notes and / or papers given at
the seminar. Being in the backwoods of South Africa, we do
not have this type of opportunity here. Please Wendy is
this possible, I would gladly pay to get this information. Our
business is coming to grinding halt, so this sort of info is
desparately needed, TIA Ralph in PE SA.

Gosh, I really could use what you are learned from this conference--my
first year out selling. Any resources, material you are willing to share
(written) I would love to absorb. Not real sure what direction to get
this info. besides waiting until next year.

For more information on the Craft Business Institute you can email
michelem@rosengrp.com. Include Craft Business Institute in the subject
line. The session is held in Baltimore annually. It's well worth the plane
ticket and scholarships were offered. The Rosen Group has a lot of services
and various publications for artists, including a mentor program for new
exhibitors to the Buyer's Market in which you are paired with an
established artist.

Ralph,
I don't think Wendy reads the group every day, but I have forwarded your
message to her. If she can't help you, I will copy all the stuff I got
and you can have that, but I didn't get everything there was to get. :(

Ruth, Ann, and Sandy,

Did any of you attend the "How to be a Dynamic CraftSeller"? I didn't
get to go and would like to get a copy of any handouts they gave. I
fear I may be a boring craftseller....

Wendy,
what kind of costs are involved? How long of a program, etc? Thanks
for your help.
