I have been using Northwest Indian designs on Raku pottery for about 10
years. I have been using masking tape to make my stencils. I would
like to know if anyone has any suggestions on a better way to get the
designs on a piece of pottery.
Thank you.

Was at a workshop and one potter there used contact paper as a stencil
means......sold at walmart, etc.....he said he had great success with
it......stayed on the clay a lot better than masking tape...yet removed

i make stencils out of transparency sheets (the ones for overhead
projectors), and use a stencil burner to cut the designs out. the
plastic is really thin and flexible, generally if you dampen the stencil
it sticks on the clay. you have to work a bit harder at it if the
design is on a very curved portion of the pot.

they make special transparency sheets that you can run through your
computer printer too, i plan to try these as well from drawings i have
done on the computer, but have not gotten to it yet.

One option that can work is contact paper. Or for a more durable stencil,
cut it into thin mylar, drafting film,( or paper if it suits your needs
better ), then get a can of spray tack from an art or drafting supply and
spray the back.

Hi Greg,

I just picked up a great book last night, thought it might interest you.
"Resist and masking techniques" by Peter Beard.

Greg,

I have been using art masking fluid on my raku pieces. I paint it on
with a brush then let it dry for about 5 minutes. I apply the glaze and
then just peel off the masking fluid. However, I have not yet figured
out how to clean my brush other than the slow process of peeling it off.
