dried wood from texas

We don't have a wood kiln, but do have two seldom used fireplaces. Back
long ago when we first moved into this desert house we bought loads of
firewood at every opportunity and stacked it out back against the pink
house (never was a "house," just an old storage structure, and hasn't
been pink for years, but it's still the "pink house.") Ala David's
comment about wood being "too dry," we soon learned that if the wood had
been stacked for a few months in this climate, we needed to select our
pre-cut pieces and soak them in a bucket of water overnight before
burning; otherwise, even big chunks would go up the chimney in minutes.

In the Mojave feeling like I've seen something grand upon discovering
that the guys digging our well were using "CLAY shipped in from
Bakersfield" to line the deep hole (will be 340 feet) as they auger or
drill (or whatever they do) down...prevents the sand from slippin' and
slidin' and refillin' the hole before they can get the pipe in. Don'tcha
just love clay?
