I was just about to send an exhibition report, when I read the
request from Samantha about modern art/ceramics for a thesis. Well,
here's my little suggestion to add to your growing heap: have a
look at Picasso's ceramics.

I have just been to see an exhibition that I recommend to anyone and
everyone - if you are likely to be in London between now and 16
December - get to the Royal Academy in Piccadilly and enjoy!

The pots are wonderful, and the best part of this exhibition (about
200 pieces) is that it is so entertaining. Lots of his ideas were
really funny, and it's nice to wander round an art gallery where
people are laught out loud.

I didn't spend long enough there but plan to go again, and might even
treat myself to the catalogue which looked quite good. I enjoyed the
work itself just on its own terms, but it is also interesting to
recognise the pots that inspired him and see what he did to and with
the ancient traditions.

There are lots of moulded plates and dishes on which he painted
faces, or food, or almost anything. Not just painted though, he
incised and scratched and scraped and stuck bits on - some of the 3D
food is quite startling! There is an oblong dish with a painted
bullfight scene showing the whole arena with its arches, the crowds,
etc - it all seems to come to life. Amazing.

The RA seem to have discovered clay suddenly, as there is a show
planned after this of Chinese ceramics. That will be also be a good
one judging by what I read about it.

Jenny--

If you have it, could you post the snail/web address(es) for the Royal
Academy in Piccadilly? I'm sure many of us have no immediate plans to
cross the pond () but would be interested in the Picasso catalog as
well as those for future ceramics shows. Thanks!

The Tacoma Art Museum is hosting the exhibition: "Picasso: Ceramics From
the Marina Picasso Collection" The show opened today in its only U.S.
appearance....This exhibit features 61 pieces from Picasso's personal
collection......Should be a knockout exhibit......For those of you near
enough to Tacoma, Washington, for a one or two day outing....the trip
will be well worth it. Take Care ! Pat
