glaze gurus help needed re illminite

Hi Glaze Gurus:

Just heard from our clay supplier that illminite will no longer be
available. (Not being mined anymore) I've read in Hammer that illminite is
a made up of titanium dioxide and FeO (Black iron oxide).

One of our favoite glaze recipies contains 3% illminite. So my question is
can we use TiO2 and Black Iron oxide instead and how much of each?

Needless to say, Thanks a milliion for any suggestions.

Emily

Hello Emily,

QIT-Quebec Iron & Titanium owns an ilmenite mine in northeastern Quebec(
still in operation)
and the ore is shipped to Tracy Quebec where it is processed into iron
pigs,different titanium
dioxide slags, steel billets and steel auto parts.
So it is not true that ilmenite is no longer mined, your material supplier
should look for another
ilmenite source.

Emily...

This one went through my supplier about 9 months ago. Without belaboring it, no
Ilmenite and rutile are not going away. They are an integral part of industrial
ceramics and the manufacture of TiO2.

If they ultimately claim they can't get it, post me and I'll relay all the notes
from before.

You can't really duplicate Ilmenite or rutile by combining proper proportions of
TiOz and Iron oxide. Mother nature's gotta do it.

Hello Emily,

QIT-Ilmenite has the following chemical composition:

1-SIO2 10.54
2-AL2O3 6.79
3-FE2O3 32.72
4-TIO2 25.69
5-CAO 2.06
6-MGO 3.76
7-FEO 12.78

The composition of ilmenite may vary from mine to mine,
so the theoritical chemical formula FE2O3.TIO2 is a general
one.

If you wish you may substitute for ilmenite using QIT-Ilmenite
formula as a starting point; if so, the amount of ilmenite should be
multiplied
by the following proposition:

1-Iron oxide .45
2-Rutile .26
3-China clay .19
4-Whiting .03
5-Magnesium carbonate .07
