Amy,

Concerning Indian artifacts in your backyard. You are right to be
concerned about possessing these artifacts as the Archaeological
Resources Protection Act of 1979 does make it a felony to take artifacts
from Public or Indian lands. Its okay to take them from privately owned
lands with permission, but then you should consider if you are depriving
historians, archaeologists or tribal members of important resources.

For complete details of the law check out this website:

I'm replying to the group as I think this is important. I was at a
potters home recently and he showed me some sherds of pottery he had
collected in the southwest. I asked him where he got them. He said he
picked them up at Chaco Canyon. Geez!!!! A National Monument. I told him
that he was violating the ARPA law and it was a felony to take these
things. He had no idea. I think a lot of people don't.

If you are finding spearheads you may well be looking at artifacts that
are older than 100-200 years. Have them checked out at a local museum or
check with federal agencies like your local National Forest or BLM
people.
