If the work of Jeff Koons is art of any kind, then a grits serving set,
regardless of form, can easily be art also. When working in an art
department, it is necessary that your work be seen as "serious." To this end,
if your work appears lighthearted, you must adopt sufficient personal angst to
convey the seriousness of your art. You might start by calling it "sub-level
socioeconomic iconography" rather than Kitsch. The grits servers could be
"vessels for the ritual recall of rural race memory." In any event, it all
has to be serious and black clothes helps, too.

I never realized that I could call my series of drawings about tattoos
"sub-level socal iconography." I've kept them hidden for years, but now I
think I will dig them out of their brown paper wrapping and resurrect them. I
didn't wear all black back then, so that's probably why my colleagues in the
drawing class didn't take me seriously. Psychological angst resolved. Thanks
Joe.

Thank you, Joseph Herbert, for putting it all into perspective! And for
giving me my laugh of the day---it was great! Don't we all sometimes take
ourselves a little too seriously? Thanks agaian.....
