Yes, pulling pallets apart for firewood is a terrible idea.
At the pallet FACTORY they MAKE pallets, and the scrap boards
are discarded because they aren't good enough to use.
The boards are still green (wet), so they must be stacked to dry.

Another source for firewoood around here is the "pallet rebuilder".
These guys buy old pallets, re-build them, and sell them.
All the broken boards are free for the taking. The advantage is
that the wood is extra-extra dry, from years of service as a pallet.
The drawback is that there are still nails in the boards.

I just bang 'em flat before I stack, and rake 'em out afterwards, and if
they stick to the pots it adds that little extra something!!
