it is so cool that tony opens the door so wide.

when you build a kiln, the first thing you do, is find fuel.
david hendley lives next door to a pallet factory.
he fires his ware natural reduction, cone 10.....as fast as he can.
with old pallets.
he does not use, care for, or give a damn about `wood effects`.
he uses a fuel that he gets free, all he wants, forever. and he
makes great pots.

that is the point.

is one fuel better than another......? is wood more noble than electricity?
what ever fuel that is available to you, and it works well for you......use
it.
is a 50 hour firing noble and better? it is whatever you want to do.
why is reduction more noble than neutral?
not.
the pots that are created, built, and fired in the technique that works
for the potter is the best. to be a crafts person, you must adapt to
your environment.....use what is available and make it work for you.
you cannot ever be someone else........if you fire in your garage with
an old l&l kiln....and can only get it to cone 3.........geez, make a cone
3 glaze, make great pots, and who knows, they may be the best
pots in the world.
i have this strong feeling, if hamada was in prison for 20 years....and
he had an old skutt 181 and some glaze materials and clay....he would
make great pots.......really great pots.....they may find there way into
a museum.

so, mr quickie, build the coffin kiln, then send me the plans.
we will love the coffin kiln, we have two 50 acre woods, and a
saw mill. and two full time sawmills within 10 miles.
wood is everyplace.....just pick it up and fire it........never kill
a live tree......and we have 15 great potters at hay creek to fire
the kiln is teams of 3.......24 hours....piece of cake.
but, kids in the city, or a suburb......can't have that.
so make great pots, and sure as hell be proud of them.
and don't let `quickie` push you around....or we will
sig sheila on him........
