When I lived in Hilo, Riftzone showed and sold in downtown Hilo in the old
store complex on the waterfront . I believe their pottery is on that side
of the Island. The potter I studied with is Steve Friedman in Kurtistown
(on the way to Volcano; you should call first. Another sophisticated potter
lived in Volcano: Chiu Leong who sometimes gives classes and often has an
open shop. One potter will lead you to another. It might be worth a visit
to Univ Hawaii at Hilo
or the Community College ( at the same location) to meet Gordon Lee, an
instructor who does really great raku with coiland throw pots. Again a
call might be in order. There is one phonebook for the whole island, and
it's all local call.So
that might be a handy way to your search.

Kris,

You are in for a treat as there are some wonderful things to see on the Big
Island. Riftzone has moved from the Hilo side over to the Kona side. You can
find out where by talking to someone at the Blue Ginger Gallery in Captain
Cook, not too far south from Kailua-Kona. I heard that they love to have
potters visit, just call first. They may still have their gallery in Hilo, so
if you get over there you can ask where they moved.

Just up the mountain from Kona is an artist village named Halualoa. There are
galleries there and a fun straw craft shop.

In Volcano be sure to visit the Volcano House Gallery, and if you have time,
you could call on a couple of potters there.
I contacted Stephen Freedman who graciously showed me his studio and was
willing to share celedon recipes and a firing schedule. I haven't taken him
up on it yet, but maybe you can get this info and share it with clayart. :)

Carl Meigs is a clayart list potter and told me about Stephen, he knows other
people to contact as well.
>>Carl?? Are you listening??

We discovered on our last trip an artist village starting up on the North Kona
side. I think actually it is considered the Kolhala Coast district, and near
where the roads intersect at Hawi. There is a couple making some very nice
pottery in the back of their gallery space. I think it is called Moonstone,
or something like that.

Have a great trip! Let us hear all about it when you return.

Aloha.

Kris,
Never heard of the "riftzone", but be sure to visit the Holualoa
Gallery --just a couple of miles from Kailua-Kona. In the "town" (all 2
blocks of it) of Holualoa.
Artist Matthew Lovein. Does incredible stuff.

There is a place above Kona on the big island called
Halualowa
there is the Studio 7 gallery,
run by Setsuko Morinoue
it is a wonderful gallery
the village is great
across the street is Matt Levins gallery he makes Raku
he is very successful and a wonderful person to meet
sculptors Debra Butterfield and John Buck have a home there

In the town of Hilo there where galleries for pottery
and at the Volcano National park there is a gallery there

although when you are a potter in the islands you have to ship everything in,
it is actually cheaper than shipping overland, and there is a vibrant pottery
culture alive on the islands

call studio 7 gallery and ask for Setsuko and tell her you got the information
from me, and ask her about potters in the area,
plus in the town of Captin Cook there is a pottery center

Donn Buchfinck
pronounced Boofink
and no I did not make this name up

have a great trip and do not forget to bring some warm clothes

I was on the Big Island about 1.5 years ago and ran into the RiftZone potter. H
was doing a street art fair in Kona. I think that actual studio is in Hilo (on
the other side of the island). Seemed to be a nice guy until he learned I also
did raku and then clamed up (like I would somehow steal his technique). I also
ran into some raku work in some giftshops in both Kona and Hilo that was pretty
nice. I think by a different artist. Also Matt Lovein has a studio around Kona
(but I couldn't find it) He has a web site at
http://www.aloha.net/~mlovein/
I have seen his work in several galleries and love it.

Good Luck,
Gary F.
