$40.00 is a very good price! I have been using 3 1/2 digit multimeters from
JDR Microdevices for about six years now, with great results. The DMM-9303C
reads up to 1999 C (not 500C like it sez in the ad) and sells for $39.99.
My old one got its case melted from being too close to a hot kiln surface,
but it worked until the battery ran down and I couldn't (non-destructively)
open the battery compartment. It comes with a type K thermocouple probe.
See http://www.jdr.com/ and look in the Test Equipment catagory for
details.

For cheap thermocouples, Omega offers a package of 5 for $17. See
http://www.omega.com/products/bw-tc.html for details.

I have nothing to do with either company, except as a very satisfied
customer.
