Yes, you can absorb manganese and ALL heavy metals through
the skin. Don't stick your arm down in the glaze bucket. Yes, I
know we all do it. Don't. It is VERY bad practice in general,
though there are glazes which would not be harmful. Probably.

Use a mixer, a commercial wire whip, a slotted spoon - whatever
you've got. Or, if you really like to use your hand/arm, get a pair
of those rubber gloves that reach the armpit, and mix to your heart's
delight.

Meanwhile, manganese should be handled with care and attention.
Don't inhale it (dust), swallow it (dust on your coffee cup), don't
hang around the kiln while it is firing; there is reason to suspect the
fumes being the most dangerous form. And don't stir it with your bare
hand/arm.

Kia Ora!
The arm in the bucket was the way most of us learnt how
to mix a glaze up. Now with more knowledge of toxicity we are
using more mechanical means. These are the ones we use in our group.
1. A toilet brush - needs a lot of cleaning afterwards.
2. A wooden paddle
3. A cream mixer, (my favourite) from the farmers or dairymen who
churn their own cream. If you have never seen one it is a long steel
rod with a handle for easy holding and on the bottom is a flat plate
with holes of about an inch in dia. in a circle around the base. This
when lowered into the glaze bucket and pumped up and down for about five
minutes works really well and can be wiped off with a sponge, so no
waste.
4. A long handled paint stirrer, also works very well but I find
makes a few bubbles esp if you have a revved up hand drill.

They all get your arm out of the bucket!
