Mel, you brought up a couple of things:
GOOD Scotch (single malts) are about $50.00 in OR today! But I don't get to
drink since last December when I got a peek over the edge, saw "the
bottom", and failed to appreciate the view. Sure miss the Scotch, the local
ales, and the affordable Chardonnay's, though.
Article in Fine Woodworking a couple months ago talked about patinizing
galvanized iron hardware (hinges, screws, etc) by removing the zinc plating
with 10% or so HCl (Muriatic Acid), then heating them to red heat, and
allowing them to cool in the open air. I tried this and it works swell.
Then I tried tossing some old, rusty tools and hardware into the acid. The
rust was gone in 90 seconds! Best answer I've seen yet. Don't try it with
bronze or brass though, cause just the zinc dissolves.
On tools: there are only two possible errors in tool buying:
1. Not buying a tool
2. Not buying a good tool
Many of my "life regrets" are centered around these. I am blessed with a
wife who has come around to my way of thinking on this, and no, you can't
have her!
On hardware stores: Don't trust anyone under 60, me included (just barely).
Roger, in Western Oregon where it's really nice today, but they won't let
us play outside.
