RE: Modern Art/Ceramics paper ideas

Sam, I have a few directions you could go in for your paper=21

The Arts and Crafts movement circa 1880, (An offshoot of the Romantic
movement in art - influenced by the Middle East, Persia, and Italian
Renaissance) prompted ceramic artists to return to the studio potter
tradition. Read about leaders in the field: Williiam Morris and John Ruskin
and then look at the Art Pottery movement in Europe and the United States.
Women played a very important role in this era of clay=21 (i.e. Adlaide =
Alsop
Robineu 1865-1929).

George Ohr (1857-1918) from Biloxi Art Pottery in Misssissippi, was an
extremely unique ceramic artist of his time. He has become well known in
the past ten years or so after a huge load of his work was discovered
packed away and sold at auction. (Another artist not recognized or
purchased during his lifetime.) New books and many articles have appeared
in the recent past.

Many painters of this period produced or painted ceramics which were
directly related to their conventional painting. See: Paplo Picasso (I
think a new book on his ceramics was published recently), Henri Matisse,
Alberto Giacometti, Fernand Leger, Marc Chagall, and Georges Roualt.

A little digging will uncover much in the way of ceramics which are rarely
discussed/covered in the traditional art history courses, unless of course
you are covering Ancient Greece and the Mediterranian or Pre-historic eras.

Regards and enjoy the discovery, Susan Barbehenn
MFA Ceramics 1996
