mosaic making tools help

Hi All,

If anyone out there has experience making mosaics with pottery shards, all
the info I can get would be appreciated. I especially need info on tools
and best materials, such as glue and grout needed. Is there any tool out
there that will cut broken pottery to make shapes to use in mosaic design?

TIA,

Kathy

Indoor or outdoor installation? I like thin set rather than smelly mastic.
Portable or permanent? Portable may require adhesive & grout with flex
qualities, I've used liq. nail silicone caulk, & mastic over the years.
Exposed to freeze & rain or not? Seal off all top edges, eliminate any shapes
that would hold water. Hammers, drimmals (sp) with sil. carbide wheels & bits
(Use water and eye protection), power grinders, tile nippers, electric tile
saws & hand tile saws all shape tile to varying degrees.
Hang with local tile setters, as usual the more you learn the more questions
you'll have.
JOY in Tucson It's rained every morning. How odd.

Kathy,
For fine shaping of pieces of tile or pottery for mosaic, go to a tile
supply place and get a tile nipper. It's like a pair of pliers that
you use to chew off small pieces with. Much more control than just
hitting it with a hammer.
