Hello,
I have both editions of Nils' book. The new one is basicly a rehash of the
original, with great photos, and better drawings. Also some new neat stuff
like MFT Salt/Wood modifications, electric kiln reduction, raku kils and
venturi flue design principles. However, it is more limited on the exact
bricking diagrams for the MFT that were in the first one. I find both still
have good value. I'm not sure if the original is still in print, though.
Nils, your on clayart aren't you? How about it?

John, you have said it well. The previous edition is no longer available
and while it did have the complete plans for the MFT it was modest in its
coverage of salt/wood firing, electric reduction, refractory coatings and
fuel fired burner operation. The new edition covers all that including
plans for a fuel-fired Oregon Flat Top suitable for salting. It's a small
top loading 11 cubic foot kiln. MFT plans are still available and have
been separately bound in a small printing. Steve Branfman at the Potters
Shop has them for $20.
Cheers, Nils Lou
