At CIA we use the formulation listed below. It was developed by
Robert Buganski for his sculpture courses. Preparation is every thing.
Robert s Homemade plasticene
Ingredients amounts
Brown Victory micro-crystalline wax 20lbs,(2 ten
lb. sheets, KindtCollens, Clev.)
Paraffin wax 5lbs (optional
for hardness)
Mineral Oil 5 quarts
Petroleum Jelly 8 lbs.
OM4 Ball clay 25lbs
Foundry hill Creme 25lbs
Silica 5 lbs.
totals 150lbs
approx.
Melt both waxes together then add the mineral oil and
mixwell. Add the petroleum jelly and mix until you get an
oatmeal like consistency. Premix all dry ingredients and
then add to the mix slowly. Mix well and then pour out on
a clean water soaked concrete floor. Spread out to 1-2 inch
thickness and let cool . Cut the mix up into brownie sized
chunks and store for use. Mixture can be stiffened with
more clay or softened with more mineral oil until it is right
for your needs.
Note: the substitution of mineral oil and petroleum jelly for
motor oil make this a more user friendly, but by no means
digestible mixture. Refer to the MSDS that comes with the
waxes.
