oxidation of kuroka raku (why does the iridescence go?)

Does anyone know why the copper iridescence goes away after a few weeks of
exposure to air? It seems moisture in the air has something to do with the
disappearance of the wonderful rainbow colors we get after a really good
reduction firing...
An answer right away from someone would greatly be appreciated, as we are
about to do a firing in a couple of days. Also, if a sealer is suggested,
which one would you recommend?

I'm glad you brought this up because I was looking at some raku pieces I
made a few years ago and they don't look anything like they did when I
fired them. In fact, they look awful (:~( I remembered that James
Watkins said something about this when I attended his workshop, so I
found in my notes that he uses a product called Jasco tile sealer on
pieces with heavy reduction to preserve the color. Since James has
awesome work in some prestigious collections, I'm sure this is a good
idea.

I would encourage anyone who is selling raku to seriously consider using
some kind of sealer because I see a lot of work out there that looks
beautiful enough to entice people to buy and I know they will be
disappointed when the flash fades. Paying attention to this detail will
raise your level of professionalism and thoughtfulness toward your work.

What is Kuroka Raku?

I installed a 4 ax5 foot raku tiled sculpture with pacman raku glaze....
great colors, yes the air causes oxidation.......This piece is on a lani on a
condo on the beach......talk about fresh air......In any case I sprayed it
with krylon clear acryllic, it dullled the colors a bit, but two months later
I
still have some interference colors, actually just like it was when Isprayed
it....
It is all I know about right now, if you hear of a better treatment, let me
know....J
