Saturday and Sunday, October 3 - 4, 1998
10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Murrells Inlet Community Center Auditorium
Murrells Inlet, South Carolina
This workshop for beginners and experienced alike, is comprised of 12
hours of lecture/discussion and focuses on all aspects of producing
handmade tiles. Forming techniques such as rolling, extruding and
pressing will be demonstrated. Plans for home built equipment such as
slabrollers, extruders and tile presses as well as glaze recipes will be
distributed. Decorating techniques such as spraying, trailing, pouring,
sponging and brushing of glazes will be demonstrated, followed by a
discussion about the materials and processes for installation of tile
work. Marketing, especially as it applies to the special problems of
commissioned work is addressed. Topics include dealing with architects,
designers, and trade showrooms, and selling at wholesale, retail, and
trade shows. Special emphasis will be placed on booth design, portfolio
development, promotional literature and selling techniques. Next
follows a hands-on session of sume painting on clay and paper, after
which Paul will address the application of water-based china paints to
tile, as well as the Hunt-Speedball method of making silk-screens and
printing on tile. We conclude with slides of Paul s work, as well as
those of historical and contemporary architectural ceramics,
particularly work by Northwestern U.S. clay artists.
