ASH GLAZES
Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18, 1998 9:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. Friday & Saturday
Ceramics Studio, Room 2A Tatem Arts Center, Hood College 11:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. Sunday

The Ash Glaze Workshop will introduce potters to a simple approach to glaze
making, using materials that are easily accessible. Backed by a basic
knowledge of how commercial potters' materials perform, the potter with an
adventurous spirit and an open mind to the potential of locally available
materials can create beautiful stoneware glazes that are individual to the
maker.
Friday includes an introduction to the glazes and materials and an explanation
of basic chemistry, followed by two runs of tests that will be fired later in
the day. Opening the kiln on Saturday, the tests will be evaluated and a
discussion conducted on how to improve the glazes. A follow-up series of tests
will be made and the kiln fired again, followed by a slide lecture of Mr.
Roger's work. The kiln will be opened on Sunday and the tests re-evaluated.
