Hello Everyone,

I have just visited the Picasso exhibit in Tacoma,Washington. I was up in
Seattle delivering the gargoyles I carved for the set of a new production of
"Hunchback". This stop in Tacoma rounded out the trip.

I found it fastinating, and inspiring. Most people are familiar with Picasso
"the painter" or "sculptor", but seeing his ceramics brings his work even
closer to home.

His uses of slips and englobes, stains and glazes are primitive but revealing.
He was very free and loose with the materials and the result is very
effective. Some of the thrown forms are obviously not masterful, but the
decoration of these pieces are exciting.
Up stairs they have some of Picasso's prints and drawings. In the gift shop
you can find the usual assortment of tacky items with copies Picasso's work
plastered on plates, glasses, etc. They even have a selection of pottery from
someone doing slab-over-form constucted dishes. These are glazed with a
simple fish-shape design waxed on, or painted on in an oxide. There is a fair
selection of his ceramic work represented on postcards and note cards.

Some of you asked info on the book available, it is pricey at 59.95, but worth
it if you are a Picasso fan. They had some other nice texts in the museum
store as well, one having samples of all the mediums he worked in. I am
thinking about buying that one myself, it's "only" $65. (I'm still thinking
about it.)

I will be trying to create a small web page with photos from the post cards I
purchased at the museum store. There was also an informative pamphlet written
with children and families in mind. It explains his uses of the images he
chose for decoration. I'll let you know as soon as the site is available.

Hope anyone in the area gets over to see this exhibit, it's worth the trip.

Coincedently, I showed up to see the exhibit and a happy surprise was that it
happened to be the free day!! The third Thursday of the month is free at the
museum on a regular basis. So I spent my cash on Picasso postcards!!
