propane fueled ego problem?

Hey:

In response to Don's objection to Cameron's post may I just make a simple
observation. This is a discussion group and it's pretty normal for people
to disagree on some stuff. Cameron was disagreeing with some of the stuff
Don said about kilns. He said Don was wrong and really wasn't attacking Don
in a personal way. So Don accuses Cameron of being on some sort of
techno-egotrip. That's personal!

So Don, if you're going to venture opinions, experience, observations of any
kind, be prepared to have someone disagree with your viewpoint. You and I
and everyone else has the right to post whatever they want to Clayart and
the list moderator will decide what makes the list. If you don't agree with
Cameron's opinion, defend your viewpoint with information, not suggestions
that Cameron is flexing his technical muscles at your expense. It's my
opinion that Cameron's motives were not ego driven.

I believe you are quite right, Craig, on
all counts. It is necessary and useful
to divorce one's ego from any discussion
such as the ones held here - if one carries
one's heart on one's sleeve, as it were,
then it will get bruised, maybe broken.

A technical issue isn't about personalities.
At least, it should not be. If we try to embarrass
one another when opinions/experience/information
differ, discussions will quickly break down into
mere shouting matches. A waste of time. A waste
of energy. Silliness, in fact.

I actualy call this guy and talked to him for a long time on the phone.

I am sorry for my rant, I try to keep myself in check, I just do not like
people telling me that I am wrong, I have seen too many people do this and it
pisses me off. I understand my way is not the only way. But this guy Cameron
knows his stuff. He is an Engineer and does understand how a kiln is supposed
to work. He helps the ceramic industry work out there problems. As I got
what he said, it doesent matter what type of burner system you have as long
as the whole system is built balanced. He said he does a lot of computing
when he is designing a kiln, he said it takes several days. I think he
breaks it down to the basic mathimatical numbers. The way I got it is, it is
like taking a glaze formula down to it's unity formula, where as I would just
play around with the batch formula, this guy works on the molecular level. I
think he is doing something that I could not grasp without some enginnering
theory classes. he said the way he works is not intuitive, so this puts me
out of the running. And I asked him if he would design some kilns that would
work around some of the standard size kiln shelves. He has an interesting
take on the kiln building question, but he talks a totaly different language.

sorry if I came off all ego blown and all. actually it realy doesn't matter,
if you have read my postings you will have seen that I give all I have on what
ever I think I know, I stick my neck out, and It might reflect badly on me,
but I did get the chance to go to some of the great schools of our time, and
watch some truly gifted people move clay. in the end I make pots, they will
outlive my ego, and my relationships with people. I have a lot to give with
people and students, and yes my personality does get in the way, But I am
trying to accept myself in this.

take care and keep on potting
