I have seen many forced-air downdraft kilns with very tall stacks which work
just fine. As long as you have proper damper control, and as long as you
manipulate the flue to draw evenly from throughout the bottom of the kiln,
the height of the stack should not negatively affect firing.
I am not an expert here, except when I first built a forced air kiln with a 12'
sack and it wouldn't reach temp. After rereading Nils and then talking to him
on the phone, the operative principal seemed to be the the gases flow up the
stack in a wave motion. If the top of the stack is at a node (pinched spot) in
the wave, then you might as well put a damper on top of the stack.
Cameron or Nils, or anyone, can you shed more light on this?
