raku firing in electric kiln

I have two pieces of 04 bisqued raku clay that I want to glaze and fire at 06
in my electric kiln. I plan to open the kiln when finished and drop the two
pots in a garbage can filled with newspaper, then close the kiln. Other non-
raku clay peices will be in the kiln which I will leave in. If you know of a
better plan please advise. Dan

I raku out of my electric kiln regularly. A suggestion might be to put
all pots to remain in the kiln below the top shelf to some what shield
them from the rapid cooling effect of opening the kiln at max. temp.

Good luck and why mix the load?

>From my understanding, which I have heard from potters more
knowledgeable than myself, you should not open the kiln (revealant
for the ware that would be staying in) above 4000, or you would be
causing "shock" to those pieces left in. This shock could cause
the ware to crack or break.

I have friends who do electric kiln raku with very little
breakage, but never leave ware in for other types of firing in the
same kiln load.

That sounds scary.

If the kiln opens from the top you'll get a blast of super heated air.
also while it should be okay for the raku pieces, the other stuff you
want to fire regularly may suffer from the sudden cooling effect of the
open kiln door.

Maybe do the raku separately the kiln will get hot quickly when it is not
packed too tightly there is some wear and tear on the kiln you will hear
some crackling as the bricks deal with the contraction - and beware of
that hot air coming out as the top is opened

I don't want to rain on your parade and I am interested in knowing what
you decide and how it comes out.

Good luck whatever you do!!!
