The best thing I've found is simply wet sand and a sponge. It doesn't
scratch glossy glazes, but will probably do a number on dry matt surfaces.
I hope nobody finds this information abrasive.

well I use this method too. just take my peace outside and rub it with the
dirt from the ground.
